The Groveland Hotel - Luxury with an Old West grandeur and Southern Hospitality
November 13, 2008 by admin
Don’t let our Southern drawls fool you - we’ve lived in the Sierra Nevada for more than 20 years, and, oh, the stories we accumulated! Restoring the Groveland Hotel to its Old West grandeur allowed for many interesting history lessons of the region. We also discovered many very special places nearby worth deeper exploration. Our Southern Roots run deep, we were both born and raised in Tennessee, and we still firmly believe in old-fashioned Southern Hospitality. Grover is an avid golfer (but I can’t reveal his handicap), and he spends many days with friends at our local championship golf course at Pine Mountain Lake. When he’s not on the greens, he’s greeting our guests and helping them find their way around our property and our quirky Old West town. He’s
our chief cook, bottle washer, dog walker, florist, as well as my dearest friend.
I wish I still had time to fly my Beech Sierra N2052L, but honestly, I’m more than content to share a bottle of wine and my knowledge of the Groveland area with guests and members of our community. I happen to be a bit of a wine connoisseur and would love to help you explore our wine list, which was given the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and includes more than 550 labels. And yes, I did go to school with Elvis! Feel free to ask me about him, our resident ghost, Lyle, Motherlode gold rush history, our local swimming holes and waterfalls, or about my time as the sole female manager at Lockheed back in the 1970s. Integral to our Groveland Hotel family are Rusty, Miss Kitty and Princess Ginger she is Rusty’s daughter. Both are beagles and give a doggie greeting to each visitor arriving at the hotel. Although they are very vocal, they are always happy to receive a friendly scratch on the head or chest. They love taking Peggy for walks, pulling her up the hill and around the corner, noses to the ground and tails pointing skyward. This quirky community of 1500 permanent residents rests above the fog and below the heavy snow pack and claims an average of more than 300 days of sun. A town with historic buildings, including California’s oldest continuously-operating saloon, and quaint shops, Groveland is an ideal setting for a romantic diversion, a base camp for river rafting, mountain biking, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing, or it can simply be your entertaining pit stop on the way to Yosemite National Park.
Our region was home to Native Americans for several thousand years until the Gold Rush in 1848. The area was transformed into a permanent rough-and-tumble community of Garrote, a name derived from the all-too-common hangings of the period. Later re-named Groveland, the community became the headquarters for the Hetch Hetchy water project, and it is now a charming gateway to the treasured national landmark of Yosemite. Innkeepers Grover and Peggy Mosley hail from Tennessee, and their dedication to excellence and good-old-fashioned Southern Hospitality is apparent in every nook and cranny of this original 1849 adobe hotel. They offer an award-winning restaurant and saloon, superior quality mattresses, linens, feather beds and down comforters, and they hand-select each of their always-attentive staff members. Executive Chef Greg Lutes is another important person at the Groveland Hotel. His culinary talent is something out of the ordinary for a town with a 1500 population. Coming from the big city of Chicago to Groveland, one of Yosemite National Park’s gateway communities, Chef Greg had achieved an impressive Zagat score of 27 out of 30. Since coming to the Groveland Hotel, Chef Greg has had the honor of preparing fine foods for many guests, not least among them is her majesty, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, second in line for the Thai throne. Chef Greg’s mission is to use the freshest in local and sustainable ingredients in creating multi-ethnic and California cuisine. You can savor a lazy morning in the most luxurious featherbed you’ll never want to get out of, snuggle into one of our cozy bathrobes, enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee on our verandah and permit a gracious staff member to indulge your every request. Each of our unique Victorian-style rooms includes a private bath, free high-speed/wireless Internet access, telephone/voice mail, down comforters, European antiques, a coffee grinder and brewer, a CD player and an alarm clock. Our room rates vary in price from $145 to $285. Included in your cost is a morning feast we nicknamed the Innkeeper’s Breakfast. It’s available to you from 7:30 am-10:00 am, and it features a variety of fresh-baked goods, egg dishes, cereals, yogurt, freshly brewed coffee and tea, juices and fruits.
