JBead FOUNDATION HONORS COMMUNITY LEADERS AT THEIR 4TH ANNUAL ’BUILDING LEARNING COMMUNITIES ACROSS AMERICA’ AWARDS BENEFIT
October 14, 2008 by Claudia
Los Angeles, CA – JBead Foundation announces the 4th Annual ’Building Learning Communities Across America’ Benefit on Saturday, November 15th at the Historical Millennium Biltmore Hotel, downtown Los Angeles. The Black Tie Event theme is ’Empower, Envision, Unite’ and features SPECIAL GUEST and best selling author George Fraser, CEO, Fraser Net, signing his new book ’CLICK.’ Also, the event features motivational speaker, Erika McKay who is internationally known as a trainer and consultant.
Erika is a leading authority in the areas of personal development, communication and finance. She is the founder and CEO of Erika McKay Enterprises, a speaking and consulting firm. Erika earned her bachelor’s degree from Emory University. She thrives on serving, caring and empowering people to greatness! Her passion for empowering adults and youth stemmed from her unique sensitivity to assisting those who lack self-esteem and confidence. Mistress of Ceremonies: Chaundra Williams, a first generation college graduate, began her career as an educator teaching preschool over ten years ago. She is presently a teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Understanding the importance of positive African-American role models, Chaundra decided to return to school despite the challenges associated with being a single parent. In 2006, with the help of a strong support system from community associates and university faculty, Chaundra earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Human Services from the University of Phoenix. Chaundra overcame many hardships experienced not only in childhood but also throughout her educational journey and so she understands the obstacles and challenges that young people face today.
Her most recent honor was guest speaker at UCLA Higher Education Conference where she conducted a workshop for high school students entitled ’Keys to Success’ outlining methods on academic readiness and college preparation. Chaundra has extensive experience with children including those with special needs. She believes that every child possesses strengths and gifts that allow them to overcome even the most difficult challenges. Chaundra seeks to encourage, motivate, and empower young people to passionately pursue their dreams and accomplish their educational goals. The Sanskrit definition of the word Chaundra is Moonlight or ’light in the darkness.’ One of her long-term goals as a social advocate is to establish a nonprofit organization, which provides hands on assistance with processes related to higher education, job placement and transitional housing. The work that Chaundra does in the community and the goals that she has set forth for herself exemplify her purpose and her name.
Honorees: This year’s honorees are as follows: Councilman Isadore Hall, City of Compton, Ca.; Valerie D. W. Rowe, MA, Principal, Author, and Founder, Vision Spot Consulting, LLC; Mr. Derek Dingle, Editor, Black Enterprise Magazine. Other honorees will be announced at a later date. Dr. Jeffery L. Butler, a community activist, JBead Foundation, founder and CEO. We thank the community insight, awareness, and generosity that enable us to create new opportunities for low-income students and at-risk youth who aspire to excel in their future chosen academic fields of study in higher education. Dr. Jeffery Butler established JBead Foundation in 2003 at the request of several university colleagues to ensure our nation’s students are a top budget priority to receive the skills and resources they need to succeed in our economy.
With the national sponsors of Black Enterprise and Wells Fargo Bank, the foundation is able to assist young professionals with various ’unmet’ financial aid needs to acquire an education within a community built on the strengths of a culturally diverse population. The Foundation recently launched the After School Youth Literacy Project, which will target at-risk youth making the transition from 8th-9th grade.
The Economy: With increasing awareness of the related social, political, and economic crises in America today it is imperative that we continue to invest in small business so that you are able to see your dollars invested in the economy to directly generate spending for our next generation.
Benefits: The proceeds raised from this event will go to aid students with scholarships to further continue their education and at-risk youth who are either in 9th grade or are making the transition from 8th to 9th grade. We want to assist this population of students to help steer them through a course of significant educational and life transitions, which are often filled with diminishing levels
of guidance.
