47th Annual Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club Watermelon Festival

The Redcoats of the Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club present: The 47th ANNUAL Sunland-Tujunga Watermelon Festival on August 8, 9, 10, 2008, Raising funds for service and charity. Festival Hours: Friday - 5:00 p.m. to 11:00p.m, Saturday - Noon to 11:30 p.m, Sunday - Noon to 10:30 p.m. Watermelon carving display, watermelon eating contest, seed spitting contest, hat decorating, and Festival Queen Contest. Bring the whole family and enjoy the rides, the games, and the contests!
Relax and watch the free entertainment from the pavilion or the Beer Garden! Shop in the Festival Marketplace! Eat heartily in the Festival Food Court! Cool off with the free watermelon! Enter the seed spitting and watermelon eating contests! Visit the petting zoo! There’s something for everyone! Free Watermelon served Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Carnival Rides (Unlimited Rides with bracelet!) Friday only - Buy a bracelet for $25, get unlimited rides from 5 p.m. to closing! Big kids and grown-ups can get thrills and chills on the ferris wheel, rolo-plane, octopus and more! The little ones will love the merry-go-round, bumper cars and other pint-sized rides and slides.
Festival Marketplace: Temporary tattoos, gifts, arts and crafts, face painting, candy, jewelry, palm and card reading, clothing and more!

Petting Zoo - Does your youngster love animals? We’ve got animals that kids can pet and cuddle to their heart’s content. 

Game Arcades - Try your hand at the amusement booths sponsored by many Sunland-Tujunga civic and community groups. Ring toss, darts and all kinds of games! Who knows? Maybe you’ll win a bundle of prizes! Pick up a ticket when you play a game on Saturday and Sunday - but don’t forget to put it in the hopper at the Watermelon Booth. You might be the lucky winner of a bicycle at the drawing at 9:00 p.m. each day. (Winner must be present at the drawing.)

Watermelon Carving Display - At the Spitway: Watch Ana Zadoyan create a work of art from a watermelon. No two designs are alike. Watermelon Eating Contest (At the Spitway) Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
Sponsored by the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club. Enter the watermelon eating contest — each age group has its own contest! Prizes will be provided by local merchants who are members of the Chamber of Commerce.
Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest! (At the Spitway) - Sponsored by Breadmasters Enterprises, Staffed by the Cheerleaders from VHHS On-going throughout the Festival at the Lions Seed Spitting Booth / Spitway. Can you break the record of spitting watermelon seeds 68 feet, 9 1/8 inches set in Luling, Texas? If you can do it, you will win an additional $1000 prize, donated by the sponsor, Breadmasters Enterprises 2007 Seed spitting champion Kyle Silos. Prizes will be awarded by age group at the end of the Festival Classes:
Kids 1-5 years of age, Kids 6-11 of age, Teens 12-15 year old, Adults 16 and older. Cost is $1 for 3 seeds.
Prizes will be given based on distance where the seed stops. The seed that goes the farthest will be recorded and cash prizes will be awarded for the longest spit in each class at the end of each day and at the end of the Festival. If you wish to compete for the cash prizes, please register your name, age and phone number with the attendant at the booth, who will record the distance your seed went.
