MODEST MOUSE Concert - Tickets on sale now!
January 29, 2009 by Claudia · Leave a Comment
Issaquah, WA, indie rock trio Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. After honing their muscular sound in “The Shed” — a makeshift practice space built by Brock on the land next to his mother’s trailer — Modest Mouse entered Calvin Johnson’s Dub Narcotic Studios to cut their 1994 self-titled debut single, released on Johnson’s K Records label. Following a move to the Up label, the trio issued two 1996 LPs, This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About and Interstate 8. After returning to K, Modest Mouse released The Fruit That Ate Itself in 1997; its follow-up from later that year, The Lonesome Crowded West, was the band’s breakthrough, and in the wake of a major-label bidding war, they signed to Sony. The rarities collection Building Nothing out of Something appeared on Up in early 2000, followed later that year by their long-awaited Epic debut, The Moon & Antarctica. In 2001, the band issued the Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks EP and K released Sad Sappy Sucker, a “lost album” that was intended to be the group’s full-length debut back in 1994. Brock kept busy with his Ugly Casanova side project, which delivered Sharpen Your Teeth in 2002. Modest Mouse finally returned in 2004 with Good News for People Who Love Bad News, their best-received record and a Top 40 hit as well. For their next record, Brock
enlisted the help of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, who not only added his songwriting and playing skills to We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank — which was released in early 2007 — but also toured with the band as a member. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide.

Mötley Crüe is back and ready to rock! Don’t miss your chance to see these notorious bad boys of rock perform live with Hinder, Theory of a Deadman, and The Last Vegas. Get advance tickets or amazing seats with a ticket package. Available now! Yes!! Mötley CRÜE is hitting the road again, with a trio of headbanging protégés in tow. Fresh off this summer’s Crue Fest, the veteran hard rock band will launch its Saints of Los Angeles 2009 Tour Feb. 2 in San Diego, joined by Hinder, Theory of a Deadman and The Last Vesga. “It’s great to go back out on a tour like this where the bands are all about returning rock to the forefront of music today,” says Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe. “On top of it, we get to introduce a new band who jumped the line to arenas through the Guitar Center: On Stage contest. Just like Ozzy gave us a chance and took us on tour at the start of our career, we’re looking forward to taking The Last Vegas on the road and giving them the same opportunity.” SEE VIDEO: VIEW MOTLEY CRUE VIDEO
About the winner of “Your Chance to Make Rock History”: On a recent night at the venerable Los Angeles music club the Whisky a Go Go, the Last Vegas walked away from a battle-of-the-bands contest with what most developing acts can only dream of: an opening slot on a major arena tour, a recording deal and a management contract. As the winner of the first Guitar Center On-Stage: Your Chance to Make Rock History contest, held November 10 and judged by the members of Mötley Crüe , the Last Vegas will receive all that and more. The Chicago-based rock outfit’s prize includes an opening slot alongside Theory of a Deadman and Hinder on Mötley Crüe ’s upcoming 25-plus-city North American arena tour as well as a management contract with Tenth Street Entertainment and a recording deal with Eleven Seven Music. In addition, the Last Vegas will get a $25,000 check from Guitar Center and $20,000 in new gear from Gibson Guitar. The band’s not yet titled debut single is slated to stream on AOL Music November 24 and be available for download on iTunes the following day.
“Guitar Center and Mötley Crüe have given an opportunity to a band like us, who have been working hard and pursuing our dreams for a really long time to carry the torch and be the next rock ‘n’ roll sensation,” said Last Vegas guitarist John Wator, whose band was one of six finalists (from nearly 8,000 contestants) that performed three-song sets during the contest. The contest also plays into a cross-promotional campaign between Guitar Center and Mötley Crüe ’s tour, which begins February 2, 2009, at Cox Arena in San Diego and wraps March 18 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. The June release “Saints of Los Angeles,” the first Mötley Crüe album recorded by the band’s original members in more than a decade, has sold 236,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Guitar Center will provide the Last Vegas with tour support, which could be in the six-figure range, according to Hinz. “We’re basically offsetting the costs,” Guitar Center manager of event marketing and promotions Dustin Hinz said. “We’re going to make sure they have everything they need while on tour, within reason.” By Mitchell Peters -

THE KILLERS - Superstars from Las Vegas, Nevada!!
January 24, 2009 by Claudia · Leave a Comment
The Killers are an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Formed in 2002, the group consists of Brandon Flowers (vocals, keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitar, vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (percussion, drums). Part of the post-punk revival movement, The Killers draw influence from music styles of the 1980s and 1990s. The group’s debut album, Hot Fuss (2004) brought the band mainstream success. The Killers’ second album, Sam’s Town, was released in 2006, and the compilation album Sawdust containing B-sides, rarities, and new material, was released in 2007. The band’s first two albums have sold in excess of 12 million copies worldwide combined. The band’s most recent work is their third album, Day & Age, which has been produced by Stuart Price and is due to be released in late November 2008.
after responding to an ad that Keuning had placed in The Sun newspaper. Ronnie Vannucci Jr. and Mark Stoermer were approached by Flowers and Keuning with an offer to join “The Killers”, a name which comes from the bass drum of a fictional band in the music video for the New Order song “Crystal”. Initially, The Killers played at large clubs in Las Vegas, Nevada. With the band’s lineup stable and its repertoire of songs expanding, the band attracted the attention of a British representative for Warner Bros. Though the Warner Bros representative passed on the band, he took the demo back with him, showing it to a friend who worked at UK indie label Lizard King. The Killers signed that summer to the British label.Hot Fuss (2003–2005) - The Killers released their album Hot Fuss in June 2004 in the United Kingdom on London-based indie record label Lizard King Records, and in United States on Island Records. Hot Fuss has been classified 4x Platinum by the BPI and 3x Platinum by RIAA. The band also had chart success with its singles “Mr. Brightside“, which reached the Top 10 in the UK when released, and “All These Things That I’ve Done”. However, their main mainstream success came when they scored a number three chart position with their re-release of “Somebody Told Me“. The members of the band appeared as themselves in the episode “The New Era” of the teen television drama The O.C., which aired in December 2004. In January 2005, the band was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. They performed “Somebody Told Me” and “Mr. Brightside”. In July 2005, The Killers performed on the London stage of the Live 8 concert. They performed “All These Things That I’ve Done”. To their surprise, Robbie Williams incorporated the song’s refrain “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier” into his own performance. Coldplay and U2 followed suit, and at their separate concerts played in Las Vegas, with The Killers in the crowd, incorporated the line into their songs “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face” and “Beautiful Day”, respectively
Sam’s Town (2005–2007) - The Killers’ second album, Sam’s Town, was released in October 2006 under Island Def Jam Music Group. Brandon Flowers said that Sam’s Town would be “one of the best albums of the past twenty years”, though the album received a mixed response from critics and fans. The album sold over 700,000 copies worldwide in the first week of release, with a number two debut on the Billboard chart. The record sold over a million copies by January 2007. The album produced four singles in the United Kingdom and United States: “When You Were Young” released in September 2006, “Bones” which was released in November 2006, “Read My Mind” which was released in February 2007, and “For Reasons Unknown” which was released in June 2007. The first single from Sam’s Town, “When You Were Young”, entered the chart on downloads alone at number five, and the following week on its official release went to number two on the UK Singles Chart. In September 2006, The Killers were the musical guest on the 32nd season premier of Saturday Night Live, performing “When You Were Young” and “Bones.” The Killers recorded a live session at Abbey Road Studios for Live from Abbey Road on November 29, 2006. They performed an almost totally unplugged set, which included a rendition of the Dire Straits hit “Romeo and Juliet”. In February 2007, The Killers attended the BRIT Awards in the United Kingdom, where they performed “When You Were Young”. The band won two awards - International Group & International Album.
Sawdust and Day & Age (2007–present) - The band released a compilation album called Sawdust, containing B-sides, rarities, and some new material, in November 2007. Sawdust has been classified Gold by the BPI. The album’s first single “Tranquilize”, a collaboration with Lou Reed, was released in October 2007. The band released a cover version of Joy Division’s “Shadowplay” on the American iTunes Store that same month. The album also contains the songs “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town”, (a The First
Edition cover), “Romeo and Juliet”, (a Dire Straits cover), and a rare demo version of “Move Away” which Brandon Flowers later stated was a mistake on the part of the band’s record label; the proper version the group intended to put on the album was previously available on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. The Killers released a Christmas song called “Don’t Shoot Me Santa” that December. The song, like “A Great Big Sled”, benefits Bono’s Product Red campaign to fight AIDS in Africa. The recording was not included on Sawdust. The Killers have been finishing work on a third album, which is scheduled to be released on November 24, 2008 in the UK and on November 25 elsewhere. Brandon Flowers confirmed the album’s title as Day & Age in an interview with NME. They have been working with Stuart Price who did the Thin White Duke remix of “Mr Brightside” and produced “Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf” and “Sweet Talk”. The first single from the album was “Human”, released on September 22, with the music video released on iTunes on October 16. The band is reportedly releasing a third Christmas single in 2008, entitled, “Joseph, Better You Than Me”. The single, due to be released in December, is a duet with Elton John’ and Neil Tennant. This song will not be featured on Day & Age.
Awards and nominations received by The Killers - After forming in late 2002 when Dave Keuning’s advertisment in a music paper was answered by Brandon Flowers, Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci Jr., a Warner Bros. employee recommended them to Lizard King Records, who signed them. The band consequently went to England to record their 2004 debut album Hot Fuss, which earned them five nominations at the 47th Grammy Awards and has sold over 5,000,000 copies. Their second album, Sam’s Town was released in 2006 to mixed reviews. It won Best International Album at the 2007 BRIT Awards and has been the subject of a heated exchange between Flowers and Tom DeLonge. Their compilation album released in 2007 received a nomination for Best Album at the 2008 NME Awards USA. The Killers have won sixteen awards from 62 nominations.
American Music Awards - One of several annual major American music awards shows, the American Music Awards are awarded for outstanding achievements in the record industry, and in 2005 they were Nominated as Favorite Breakthrough New Artist. The Killers received three Billboard Music Awards nominations as Group of the Year, Digital Song of the Year and Modern Rock Artist of the Year, won two awards from four nominations at the BRIT Awards, and at the Grammy Awards they received seven nominations from 2005 to 2007 - Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Pop Performance by A Duo Or Group With Vocal, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Rock Song and Best Short Form Music Video. The Jacques Lu Cont’s Thin White Duke Remix of “Mr. Brightside” also received a nomination in 2006 for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. At the International Dance Music Awards the Killers received five nominations as Best Dance Artist (Group), and Best Alternative/Rock Dance Track for “Somebody Told me”, “Mr. Brightside” and “Read My Mind”. The Killers have won one award from three nominations at The Meteor Music Awards are Ireland’s national music awards. The MTV Video Music Awards were established in 1984 by MTV to celebrate the top music videos of the year. The Killers have won one award from four nominations as Best New Artist in 2005 and won Best Rock Group at The MTV Europe Music Awards. The four members of Chicago’s Fall Out Boy came together in suburban Wilmette around 2001. Vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz, drummer Andrew Hurley, and guitarist Joe Trohman had all been in and out of various units connected to Chicago’s underground hardcore scene. Most notably, Hurley drummed for Racetraitor, the furiously political metalcore outfit whose brief output was both a rallying point and sticking point within the hardcore community. As Fall Out Boy, the quartet used the unbridled intensity of hardcore as a foundation for melody-drenched pop-punk with a heavy debt to the emo scene. They debuted with a self-released demo in 2001, following it up in May 2002 with a split LP on Uprising that also featured Project Rocket (for which Hurley also drummed). The band returned on the label in January with the mini-LP Fall Out Boy’s Evening Out with Your Girl, but by this point a bidding war of sorts was already in full swing.
Fall Out Boy eventually signed a deal with Gainesville, FL’s Fueled by Ramen, the label co-owned by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Fiorello, but also received an advance from Island Records to record their proper debut. The advance came with a right of first refusal for Island on Fall Out Boy’s next album, but it also financed the recording of Take This to Your Grave, which occurred at Butch Vig’s Smart Studios compound in Madison, WI, with Sean O’Keefe (Lucky Boys Confusion, Motion City Soundtrack) at the helm. Take This to Your Grave appeared in May 2003, and Fall Out
Boy garnered positive reviews for their gigs at South by Southwest and numerous tour appearances. Their breakout album, the ambitious From Under the Cork Tree, followed in spring 2005, quickly reaching the Top Ten of Billboard’s album chart and spawning two Top Ten hits with “Sugar We’re Going Down” and the furiously upbeat “Dance, Dance.” The album went double platinum, and earned the guys a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
Fall Out Boy’s star status in the underground — driven by the especially extroverted Wentz, who also gained exposure with his clothing line and Decaydance imprint (of Fueled by Ramen) — had boiled over into the mainstream. They toured extensively behind the album, both at home and abroad, including spring 2006 arena dates, in addition to appearing on TRL, late-night television, and music award shows. Without taking a break, the guys eventually hunkered down to work on their follow-up record with From Under the Cork Tree producer Neil Avron and, somewhat surprisingly, Babyface. Infinity on High, whose title was taken from a line in one of Van Gogh’s personal letters, appeared in early February 2007, spearheaded by the hit single “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race.” The album continued Fall Out Boy’s streak, debuting at number one on the Billboard charts and going platinum about a month later. Released one year later, the CD/DVD package Live in Phoenix documented the band’s strength as a flashy live act. ~ Johnny Loftus & Corey Apar, All Music Guide
SLIPKNOT NATIONAL TOUR TICKETS ON SALE!!
January 20, 2009 by Claudia · Leave a Comment
Available on your Dreamcatcher Online Event Calendars AAM Blog!! SLIPKNOT NATIONAL TOUR TICKETS ON SALE Start: Sat, 12/06/08 10:00 AM CST!! Slipknot’s mix of grinding, post-Korn alternative metal, Marilyn Manson-esque neo-shock rock, and rap-metal helped make them one of the most popular bands in the so-called nu-metal explosion of the late ’90s. But even more helpful was their theatrical, attention-grabbing image: the band always performed in identical industrial jump suits and homemade Halloween masks, and added to its mysterious anonymity by adopting the numbers zero through eight as stage aliases. Add to that a lyrical preoccupation with darkness and nihilism, and an affectionately insulting name for their fans (”Maggots”), and Slipknot’s blueprint for nu-metal success was set. Slipknot were formed in late 1995 in the unlikely locale of Des Moines, IA; after some early personnel shifts, the nine-piece lineup settled around (in order from number zero to number eight): DJ Sid Wilson, drummer Joey Jordison, bassist Paul Grey, percussionist Chris Fehn, guitarist James Root, sampler/programmer Craig Jones, percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan, guitarist Mick Thompson, and lead vocalist Corey Taylor. The music scene in Des Moines wasn’t much to speak of, and the band’s big-time ambition was usually met with disbelief and ridicule, which provided the initial spark for its mostly anonymous stage visuals. On Halloween 1996, Slipknot self-released an album called Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat., which began to build a buzz around the group once it found its way to several labels. It was picked up for distribution by the Nebraska-based -ismist label, and also caught the attention of Roadrunner Records, which signed Slipknot in 1997. Working with producer Ross Robinson, Slipknot recorded their official, self-titled debut album, which was released in 1999. They gradually built an audience through near-constant touring, working their way up to the summer Ozzfest package tour, which really expanded their audience. Their live shows were a much-discussed hit with metal fans, and the band performed with such energy that Crahan gashed his head open on his own drum kit twice that summer, requiring stitches both times. The tracks “Wait and Bleed” and “Spit It Out” got the band some airplay, but most of the buzz came from touring and word of mouth. Finally, in the spring of 2000, Slipknot was certified platinum; the first such album in Roadrunner’s history.
DJing solo under the name DJ Starscream, and Root and Thompson both worked on solo material. Drummer Jordison worked with a side group called the Rejects, where he’d actually served for quite some time as guitarist. Taylor, meanwhile, started a side band called Superego, and also contributed a solo song, “Bother,” to the soundtrack of the 2002 blockbuster Spider-Man. That May, the band got some amusing press when some of its fans discovered the website of a British crocheting group also called “Slipknot,” and flooded the members’ in-boxes with excessively rude e-mails. Guitarist Joey Jordison and Static-X guitarist Tripp Eisen teamed that summer for the Murderdolls project, while Taylor reformed his old band Stone Sour and released an album. By the winter, Slipknot had still not reunited and Taylor wrote a commentary on the band’s website stating that they had not spoken in months, and that they’d rather break up than become “the next Gwar”. The statement sparked a quickly resolved minifeud between Taylor and Gwar frontman Oderus Urungus. but it also sent many of the Maggots into a tailspin. By early 2003, Taylor had retracted his comments, and announced plans for a new Slipknot album. That August the entire squad decamped Iowa for LA, where they began work on the new record with producer Rick Rubin. “Pulse of the Maggots” appeared in early 2004 as an exclusive download; it was followed by a full track listing for Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses. Slipknot then embarked on a brief tour as a warm-up for their dates headlining Ozzfest that summer. (The group also debuted a fully redesigned third generation of their famous masks.) Subliminal Verses was released in May 2004. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200, and the band toured steadily for the next year and a half in support. They released 2-disc live album in November 2005. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

LIL WAYNE - The best rapper of his generation - LAST DAYS OF TOUR!
January 14, 2009 by Claudia · Leave a Comment
Tha Carter III - Unquestionably Cash Money/Universal Motown Records recording artist, Lil Wayne will go down in history as the best rapper of his generation. Indeed he may go down as one of the best artists in hip-hop period. One look at Lil Wayne’s impeccable track record will convince even the most ardent skeptic that the New Orleans born lyricist is a strong contender for the crown of “Greatest of All Times.”
In the span of his 13-year career, Lil Wayne has sold over six million units, including his magnum opus, The Carter II (2005) which sold over 2.5 million units. He has been featured on numerous high profile singles including Fat Joe’s Grammy nominated single “Make It Rain,” and in the past two years, Lil Wayne has recorded over 1,000 songs and freestyles. According to MTV, Lil Wayne has released more music in the last two years than the legendary Tupac Shakur.
Now with his highly anticipated sixth and arguably his best album The Carter III, Lil Wayne’s career and legacy is set to climb to even greater heights. “I made The Carter III so that whatever song is on, it will stick with you forever,” says Wayne. “That’s why I took my time with it. I wanted it to be a classic.”
A classic it will truly be. With production by Alchemist, Cool & Dre, David Banner, Kanye West, and Jim Jonsin, to name a few, and guest appearances by some of today’s premiere recording artists including T-Pain (Got Money), Bobby Valentino (Mr. Officer), Babyface (Comfortable), Juelz Santana & Fabolous (Ain’t Got Nuthin) and a special guest appearance by the legendary R&B singer Ms. Betty Wright (Play With Fire), Tha Carter III is an eclectic collection of 15 songs that range from simply brilliant to sheer genius.
The first single from the Tha Carter III, “Lollipop,” featuring Static Major is the bubbling lead single that has Wayne delivering his clever lyrics laced with racy double entendres over a funky slow burning beat. Lil Wayne’s second single, “A Milli”which was produced by Bangladesh (Ciara & Ludacris), is a booming 808 laced track augmented by a tight rhythmic snare, accented by handclaps and a sample that matches Wayne’s staccato flow perfectly. In “Mr. Carter” featuring Jay-Z, we find the two trading introspective lyrics about their lives and legacy in the rap game with Wayne at his lyrical best dropping stream of conscious gems like: “I got the flo’, I’m tryin’ to see the roof/Didn’t wear a bulletproof so I got shot, you can see the proof/Blind eyes can look at me and see the truth/Wonder if Stevie do?”
Born DeWayne Michael Carter, Jr. and raised in New Orleans infamously poor Hollygrove neighborhood, Lil Wayne was discovered by Cash Money CEO Brian “Birdman” Williams when a mutual friend introduced him to the pre-teen rapper. The Birdman immediately saw a spark in the youngster’s eyes and took him under his wing. In 1993, Lil Wayne and fellow Cash Money rapper B.G. came together as a duo called The BGs and released their debut EP True Stories. In 1997, a 15 year old Wayne joined forces with BG, Juvenile and Turk to form The Hot Boys for their debut album Get It How U Live. The record sold over 400,000 copies independently. The Hot Boys sophomore LP Guerilla Warfare (1999) went platinum and earned
Wayne critical acclaim. That set the stage for his platinum selling 1999 solo debut Tha Block Is Hot. The album yielded a number one single with the title tune and was certified double platinum.
The following year Wayne released his sophomore LP Lights Out, which reached gold status and in 2002, Lil Wayne dropped his third solo LP 500 Degrees. It too went gold. Two years later Wayne released The Carter, the first album in the trilogy that would elevate Wayne to superstar status. The Carter (2004) was a commercial success selling over one million copies and reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts and #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart. In 2005, Wayne released The Carter II, which sold over 1.8 million records. 2006 saw the release of Like Father, Like Son, a collaboration between Lil Wayne and Birdman which has sold over 750,000 units.
GQ Magazine named Lil Wayne as its “Man Of The Year” for 2007. Rolling Stone Magazine tagged him as “Best MC of 2008” while Blender Magazine (2008) named him the “Best Rock Star Alive.” So it should come as no surprise that his latest solo outing finds the hip-hop super star at the top of his game. With Tha Carter III, Lil Wayne proves to the world why he is indeed considered “the best rapper alive” and one of the great recording artists of his generation.

Don’t tell rock band 3 Doors Down you can’t go home again. Formed in Escatawpa, Mississippi, the resilient fivesome has blazed a trail as the quintessential rock band, attaining massive mainstream success but somehow never losing that small town identity that has branded them rock’s truest underdogs. They’ve reigned as a genuine force of nature, boasting rock n’ roll’s most earnest work ethic – ‘The thoroughly modern American band’ - crows Billboard, one part swagger/one part tireless road warriors, brandishing an arsenal of battle-tested radio gems like their breakthrough anthem, “Kryptonite.” Unleashed at the beginning of the decade, the song seemed to capture the band’s heroic climb and steadfast refusal to be pigeonholed as just another rock band.
Now, on the cusp of releasing their first self-titled album (their fourth studio album and what some have appraised as ‘their most definitive,’) the group weighs in on what it took to refresh their innate sense of ‘place’ and deliver what just might be their masterwork - a blistering, both-barrels approach etched in the grain of brand new hits like the wistful wakeup call of “It’s Not My Time,” the contemplative “Pages,” and the stem-winding lure of “Train,” among others.
“What it took, was for us to take some real time off, go home, and then gather again as the band we know how to be,” says lead singer/songwriter Brad Arnold. “It was so appropriate to self-title the album, because after taking what amounted to almost a year-long break, we were hungry for each other’s company. A song like ‘It’s Not My Time,’ kind of sets the stage for what we’ve been through. I’ve known Matt and Todd and Chris since grade school. With a foundation like that, we were secure enough to take the time necessary, to make us want it.” Adds newest member, drummer Greg Upchurch, who joined the band after the recording of the 2005 release, Seventeen Days (this self-titled album is the first 3DD album on which he appears) “This truly is our defining moment as musicians. The writing, the recording, the level of collaboration was truly an all-around band effort. This CD is living proof of how good this band can be.”
And that’s saying something. Because when you tally the notches accrued during 3 Doors Down’s decade-plus ascension (the original group formed in ’95) you realize they’ve earned a wall-full of accolades that are also firmly cemented into rock’s record books: 13 million albums sold, 3 multi-platinum albums (their first album, 2000’s The Better Life sold an astounding 6 million copies, with their 2002 follow-up, Away From The Sun selling 4 million) six #1 hits, multiple Billboard and other awards, and a relentless road itinerary that saw them hit 32 countries in a six year roll-up with ‘nary a break in between. You don’t rack up that kind of ‘hall-of-fame’ mileage without putting a fair share of dents in the armor.
“Prior to making our new album, the average stretch we would have off would be a couple weeks here, four-five weeks there,” says bass player Todd Harrell. “We needed to get home and get our roots back under us.” The band also miraculously found time to add kindle to their homegrown The Better Life Foundation, which has raised more than 2 million dollars for local children’s charities since its inception in 2003. Most recently the group held their fourth annual Foundation concert at the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Biloxi, Ms (and has annually donated a portion of concert ticket sales to the charity organization). The band also became a key local force in providing aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Rhythm guitarist Chris Henderson’s own house was partially damaged by the hurricane. Everyone they knew, friends and family, were affected by the tragedy. “Everything seemed to be churning around that time,” continues Todd. “We knew it was important to get back to a normal life. It was time to overcome. Time to try and relax. Do some fishing. Get with family. We were doing 200 plus shows a year, stopping only to get the next record out.”
In fact, their most recent album, the acclaimed Seventeen Days, (their first album to debut #1 on Billboard’s Top Albums chart) was mistakenly believed to have been named for the quick burst of songwriting sessions for the CD, when in actuality, it marked the paltry amount of days-off between coming off the road from the Away From The Sun tour, and going into the studio for preproduction on Seventeen Days. “We’re not a band that just goes through the motions,” says Chris. “We go at everything hard. What I’m most proud of about the new album is we left ourselves a way out. Everybody hit the proverbial brick wall. Everybody fell down and everybody got back up, then we all went back in the room and, what was great, was we found all these different paths to go down.”
‘Different’ being the operative word here. Because what 3 Doors Down did after reconnecting with family, and ‘soul searching’, was opt for a new process to the creative part of their relationship. One that emphasized the undeniable strength of the group. The fact that the sum is greater than any individual part. “It is all about getting in that room and hashing it out,” recalls lead guitarist Matt Roberts. “If you look at a song like ‘Train,’ it was one of the first songs we wrote for this album. It’s kind of a building block that exemplifies the spirit of collaboration. Brad came with words and a melody and we hammered it out.” “I remember I had that one in my head at home,” laughs Brad. “I was singing it so much a friend threatened to kill me if I didn’t get it down.” Matt also remembers it as one of the ‘most fun songs to put together. “The best moments of this band have always been about keeping it a fun ride. You need that sense of accomplishment, but you also need to keep the process comfortable.”. Adds Chris: “I think it’s also fair to say we are one of the only ‘southern’ bands who has the balls to put a song like ‘Train’ out there these days.”
The band rented an old farmhouse South of Franklin, Tennessee, where they would not only write songs, but live together, for a while. Says Brad: “The farmhouse was great because it became a wholehearted experience where we just focused on the writing. It was such a close-knit atmosphere, reconnecting us after we had been doing our own thing for a while. It set a cool mood for the entire record, writing out in the country around this fireplace in the basement. Just locking ourselves away and doing it.” Matt adds that the unique setting soon sparked 26 or 27 song ideas. “But winter turned colder than expected in Tennessee. So we decided to head to a warmer climate.” The band found a ten bedroom mansion in a remote section of Orlando, Florida. They brought in Seventeen Days producer, Johnny K. and turned the house into a recording studio.
The originality of the two locations rejuvenated the band’s approach. They worked hard to capture that sense of camaraderie on the final product. Once they nailed it, they packed up and headed back to Nashville. Talking legendary mixer, Andy Wallace, into abandoning his NY studio, again, (he also mixed Seventeen Days in Nashville), and they began the final process of putting the pieces together. This album features inspired musicianship as well as some intriguing personal refrains, like on one ‘ band favorite,’ “Let Me Be Myself.” “That one touches on the wrongheaded notion of how we often try destructive methods to try and kill our pain,” says Brad. “But I also want the songs to be open to interpretation. More universal. That one is really talking about anything you can get lost in.” And the ballad “Pages”: “I think it has a lot of meaning for the whole band. What we’ve gone through,” says Matt. “Brad is pointing out what’s going on with his personal situation and ours. It was a very meaningful song for us.”
The group also nails their share of (in-yer’-face)-rockers like “Runaway.” “It’s the kind of song you put on only to get somewhere else,” says Todd. “Put it on in your car and drive as fast as you can.” He and several of the guys also touch on the last song of the album, “She Don’t Want The World,” one of the most unique 3 Doors Down offerings yet. “That song has really become one of my favorites. It doesn’t have a big chorus or anything, just Brad telling a story.” Adds Brad: “We even use loops on that one. We were so willing to try different things. I think one of the reasons this is such an important album for us is because every one of us was in a different place prior to any other record we’ve ever made. And I would say a ‘better’ place. But it’s the kind of record that never would have happened if we didn’t get off that merry go round for awhile.”
For Greg (former Puddle Of Mudd drummer, born in Louisiana, raised in Oklahoma), a song like the gutsy “It’s The Only One You’ve Got,” also exemplifies the band’s ‘sixth-sense’ for cooperation. A true democracy – right down the line. “Just the way that it went down. Chris was trying to learn another song and stumbled upon the riff for this song. Brad was like ‘hold on, I’ve got something for that.’ Then someone else would join in. The whole thing happened quickly, and it turned out to be such an inspiring song. This has been the most collaborative experience I’ve ever been involved in. And the most satisfying.” “We just can’t wait to put this sugar out and get back out on the road,” agrees Brad. “It’s definitely the one where we got our ‘grit back.”
