On September 25, 2
008, at Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice, Laurie Lathem and Netting Nations will bring you Drums to Beat Malaria (DTBM)—an nonprofit event fundraiser immersed in song, dance, and libations—from the vivacious and sensual rhythmic dancing performed to the beautifully powerful beats of Sabar drummers from the local Senegalese community, to the soulful Afropop, mbalax (Mm-bal-akh) and house beats of DJ Daylite, on September 25th, DTBM is that rare opportunity to experience life in “beats per minute” while making a difference in the lives of others by helping us “beat malaria.”
The purpose of DTBM is simple yet profound: To raise funds for the purpose and distribution of World Health Organization-approved long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets, or ITNs, to combat the epidemic of malaria in sub-Sahara Africa; a disease which claims the life of a child in Africa every 30 seconds, and the equivalent of 7 jumbo jets full of children each day. Nearly 100% of all funds raised in connection with this event will go directly towards defined ITN distribution projects sponsored by Netting Nations and NetLife Africa—two nonprofit organizations whose sole mission is win the war against malaria.
ITNs are the most cost-effective method of preventing the spread of malaria, which inflicts between 350 and 500 million people, and kills between 1 and 2 million men, women and children world-wide each year. Each ITN lasts for 3-5 years, never has to be retreated and is infused with a potent insecticide that is completely safe to humans. For every $5 raised at this event, approximately 1 ITN will be purchased and distributed to those most desperately need. Statistics have shown that for every 30 ITNs distributed, 1 less life is lost to the epidemic of malaria.
Please join us on September 25th, 2008, at Air Conditioned Supper Club, located at 625 Lincoln Blvd., Venice, California, for Drums to Beat Malaria. Doors open at 7 p.m. and performances begin at 7:30. This event will sell out so please guarantee your admission by purchasing a discounted pre-sale ticket for $25.00 at drumstobeatmalaria.org. Tickets will also be available at the door for $30.00, capacity permitting.
