News You Can Use About…Feisty Piranhas Rise Again With “Live In SoCal; Nominated In “Showcase Artist Of The Year” Category For The 20th Annual L.A. Music Awards; Upcoming Shows With Rockers Y&T, Fear
“Since their sophomore, and best known, album Shocked in 2005, Feisty Piranhas have been making a splash (forgive me for the pun) in their local Southern California music scene…the first song that literally blew me away was “Do You Know.” From the opening chords, to the later solo work (which, even I’ll admit, is incredible), to the overall style of the song, I could’ve sworn it could’ve been by the likes of the Bad Religion. Which is by all means a compliment.” RIOT ON BROADWAY (AGOURA HILLS) - 2010 has been a great year so far for the Feisty Piranhas. Not only are they nominated in the “Showcase Artist of the Year” category for the 20th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards in November; they have performed this year with rock icons Blue Oyster Cult and The Tubes, with shows coming up as Main Support for metal mainstays Y&T (August 26; Key Club) and punk legends Fear (October 28, Key Club). FP’s also headline the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills (Thursday, July 22).
The eclectic Ventura County-based rock group was recently interviewed for a “MUSIC RAW” segmenton KNBC-TV and were videotapted during the Tubes’ show by MTV-style video site, ROCKAHOLICZ (www,rockaholicz.com). Other recent highlights for the band: Headlining “Feisty Fool’s Day” at the Canyon Club this past April 1; and performing at a Los Angeles Music Awards live showcase, leading up to the main event on Thursday, November 18 at the Paramount Theater in Hollywood.
The frenetic, energetic power-pop-punk band recently took part in one of the Spring’s major concert events, performing as part of Skinnie Magazine’s “Top 100 Bands” Festival on the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach. 2009 was a watershed year for the unique “father-and-son” band (drummer Peter Lust is the father of front person Peter Alex Lust), starting with guitarist Lust Jr. being pulled onstage by seminal punk band NoFX to perform the song “Linoleum” at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood and resoundingly winning over the raucous crowd; and ending with the band again being selected a “Hot 100 Unsigned Artist for 2009″ by longtime respected trade publication, MUSIC CONNECTION MAGAZINE. In between, they opened for Nations Afire at The Whiskey and rock royalty the Blue Oyster Cult for the second consecutive year at the Canyon Club, where they also headlined; were interviewed by “Focus In The Mix” television show; released a new CD, “Live In SoCal;”perfomed with alt-rock front-runners Death By Stereo and A Static Lullaby in Long Beach; appeared with Korn at KROQ’s “Halos N’ Horns” Festival; opened for longtime rock gods, The Misfits, a third consecutive year, as well as the power/metal mainstays DragonForce, both at the fabled Ventura Theater; and were submitted for consideration for a Grammy nomination in eleven separate categories into the 52nd Grammys, the band’s fifth consecutive year receiving such an honor.Reviews of the Live In SoCal have been favorable. “A killer pop/punky bunch of guys from Southern California who have really great catchy punching memorable songs,” writes U.K. magazine METALLIVILLE. “They’ll definitely gr
ow on you as they did me…”Godfather is an excellent political number with some funky ska moments…they’ll have you hooked for sure.” RIOT ON BROADWAY raves, “Live In SoCal is an example of the amount of talent the Feisty Piranhas possess on stage, and not just in studio…you get a touch of the band’s hip-hop side in “24,” which has a rapped verse over a nicely dirty, although dark, guitar backing, with a much more punk chorus and second chorus. You also get a touch of the band’s softer side in tracks like “A Better Day” and “Alone,” although the latter features a touch of what might sound to some like a little bit of ska punk. The first song that literally blew me away was “Do You Know.” From the opening chords, to the later solo work (which, even I’ll admit, is incredible), to the overall style of the song, I could’ve sworn it could’ve been by the likes of the Bad Religion. Which is by all means a compliment. The Feisty Piranhas are, without a doubt, deserving of every award they’ve received. From the ability to sound as good live as in studio, to the commendable amount of chemistry this band has, not least of which is because of the father-son involvement. In any case, this is an excellent release for anyone who appreciates this type of music. Perfect for anyone who wants to experience this band in any way. Really good stuff here.” www.myspace.com/feistypiranhas -

Electropop outfit Passion Pit in Pianos. Clearly, someone’s doing their work in that camp. The Boston band recently signed to Frenchkiss, and on the back of a mostly solid (and in the case of “You’ve Got My Number,” very addictive) EP Chunk Of Change, they just closed out a residency at Pianos in the LES. Last night was sold out. They were worth it — good, dancey, and loud. With the keyboards (so many keyboards) and helium vocals they’re like an indie rock Supertramp. That aspect is cool. The hooks stick. It’s ballsy that they’re already rearranging their stronger material (swapping the Jackson 5 bounce of “Better Things” for something more rocking), and while I’d rather have had “The Love You Save” flashbacks, they did pull it off. I don’t know if they’re your new favorite band, but it’s certainly worth playing catch up to find out. At the very least, track down Chunk Of Change for “You’ve Got My Number,” which is very repeatable (and sorta reminds me of another up and coming electro dance outfit, Brooklyn’s Chairlift). You can hear the songs in question at MySpace, or grab an MP3.
Here’s the lead MP3, complete with Kanye style sped up vocal sample: Passion Pit - “Sleepyhead” (MP3) Chunk Of Change is being re-released on 9/16 by Frenchkiss. There’s a full length coming in early ‘09, and there’s a few photos here to tide you over ’til then.

Italian/Danish power-thrash metal act CHAOSWAVE has inked a deal with the American label Nightmare Records. The group’s new album, “Dead Eye Dreaming”, will be released in North America on November 25. The European release date will be anounced soon.
“Dead Eye Dreaming” (see cover artwork below) will contain 11 songs and almost an hour’s worth of music. The CD was mixed earlier this year by Andy La Rocque (KING DIAMOND) and features a special guest appearance by Steve Smyth, former guitarist of NEVERMORE and TESTAMENT.
Commented Smyth: “I first heard CHAOSWAVE a few years ago while on tour with NEVERMORE, and absolutely loved that they had a heavy, progressive metal sound, combined with a male-female vocal duo that sound huge, and very unique together. Everyone in this band is a top-notch musician! I am very pleased to have been asked and contributed solos to the band’s new album, which I believe is sure to snap many ears in their direction this year!”
“Dead Eye Dreaming” track listing: 01. 10 Years of Denial, 02. Fork Tongues and Foul Times (with Steve Smyth), 03. How to Define a Race, 04. A March for the Dying (with Steve Smyth), 05. Another Lie to Live in Vain, 06. Blind Eye Focus, 07. Dead Eye Dream, 08. Rise (with Steve Smyth), 09. Picture Perfect, 10. Two Shadows and11. The Evident
CHAOSWAVE is currently booking two small European tours for October and November. The band will also perform at the Metal Female Voices Fest on October 19 in Wieze, Belgium. For more information contact: NIGHTMARE RECORDS & DISTRIBUTION www.Nightmare-Records.com . ON MYSPACE:

New Jersey-based rockers, Ours, recently released their third major label album, Mercy, on April 15th of this year, after spending over five years working on it. It was recorded by legendary record producer, Rick Rubin, who has produced numerous albums including the Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Linkin Park’s Minutes to Midnight, and sessions by Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond, among many others.
Who is Ours, you ask? Unfortunately, I think it’s a shame how much talent these guys possess and how little people have heard of them. Well, if you’re someone who loves loud, emotional, gut-wrenching rock music, then please, by all means, read on.
I think everyone reaches a certain point in their life when they discover an artist that makes them fall in love with music all over again. Artists whose music is so inspiring, you often wonder what life was like before discovering them. For me, this occurred about three years ago when I discovered Ours.
At first listen, my impression of the emotional, Gothic rock sound of their music was a bit like a mix of Radiohead and Muse. Considering those are two of my favorite bands, needless to say I was pretty impressed. Since I enjoyed what I had heard so far, I decided to see them at the Avalon in Boston. I had no idea that what I was about to see that night would change my entire outlook on music forever.
To be honest, ever since the early 90’s Seattle grunge rock explosion, I had yet to hear a band or see a performance that actually moved me. In the early 90’s, there were some great bands that had evolved: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, etc. They were all so passionate and intense. Their music made me feel something. Even if it was something sad, it was something. It was real. It had affected me one way or the other, and it takes a great musician to do that.
As I got older, my love for music started to fade. It wasn’t that I loved music any less. It was the fact that there seemed to be a lack of talent in the music scene. A lot of musicians weren’t even writing their own songs anymore. How can you be passionate about what you’re singing if you didn’t even write it? How can you expect to move other people with your music when you’re not even moved by it yourself? The answer is simple: you can’t.
In my late teens and early twenties, I went to a lot of concerts, but I can’t tell you one show that I went to and was actually moved by the performance. Luckily, in 2005, I saw Ours in concert for the first time. They opened with a song titled “Murder,” which is one of the tracks off their recently released album Mercy, but at the time it was unreleased. I don’t know what in God’s name happened to me during this performance, but it completely mesmerized me. Finally, THIS was what I had been missing. This intensity, this passion, this emotion. It was indescribable.
The giant voice that escapes frontman Jimmy Gnecco is surreal. When that man opens his mouth to sing, the rest of the world seems to fade away. His voice was described in a novel How To Kill A Rock Star ,written by Tiffanie DeBartolo, as “…a voice that swept up and down the scales and was, at times, filled with deep, lush, apocalyptic emotion, and at other times was a burning falsetto of hope and love and seemed too big to come from his throat, lungs, or diaphragm. From his soul, I decided.”
The author is actually describing the voice of a fictional character in her novel, which she admits was inspired by Jimmy’s incredible voice. But it wasn’t even just his voice that amazed me, it was everything about him. The entire band has such an intense stage presence that it’s hard to take your eyes off the stage when you see them live.
At most concerts, by the time the first song was finished, I was usually ready to take a walk and grab another drink. Not this time. By the time their second song ended, I forgot I even had a drink in my hand. Actually, I think I even forgot where I was at that point. But I knew one thing: I had to hear more.
I didn’t move or take my eyes off the stage for the rest of the show. I stood there in a hypnotic state, listening to every electrifying riff and chord, praying that it would never end.
I haven’t missed one Ours show in Boston since that night. There’s something to be said about a guy that can not only scream rock music, but can cover Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” as well. Enough said.
I think it’s a shame how many talented artists exist that don’t receive the recognition they deserve, not only for the band’s benefit, but also for the audience’s. It’s hard for me to imagine what life was like before the semi-annual anticipation of seeing Ours perform once again.
I am extremely grateful that I discovered these guys, not only because of the beautiful music and amazing performances they deliver, but because they made me realize that real music… intense, emotional, passionate, soul inspired music… still existed in the world.
For those of you who haven’t been fortunate enough to experience the music of Ours, I would highly encourage you to see for yourself. You don’t know what you’re missing.

THE BOYS ARE BACK!

It’s kind of a big deal when one of those ‘where are they now’ bands pops up for a reunion show. In the case of Jones Street (myspace. com/jonesstreet69), it’s an even bigger deal. If you happen to have been around the Hollywood scene back in the late 80’s and early 90’s the name Jones Street was on every pure bred rocker’s lips. These bad boys were the poster children for everything rock city stood for. They could drink more booze than just about anyone else in the room, probably slept with most of our girlfriends, or were going to, didn’t give a damn about following the rules, and delivered an astonishing performance every time they took the stage, which in those days of Hollywood ‘big’ rock was pretty often. Jones Street was a hot ticket.
The thing is, Jones Street never ventured very far from the safe haven of Hollywood stages, so if you were a kid in Oklahoma or Idaho, you probably never heard of them. But for those of us who haunted the Sunset Strip every night, a Jones Street show was the cat’s meow. And why not? You knew everyone, who was anyone, would be there. It just wasn’t possible to go see the Jones boys and not run into at least one of the members of Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Ratt or maybe Guns N’ Roses or L.A. Guns, or one of those ‘guns’ bands. Jones Street shows were were the party was. Period.
When the Seattle scene erupted, the hair bands of Hollywood kind of dried up. Sadly, Jones Street was a day late and a few bucks short. Kurt Cobain and all his friends from up north were preaching ‘minimalist’ as their mantra, and American kids were singing right along. The glory days of rock suddenly ended, and with the passing of that era, Jones Street went M.I.A. No one knew where they went, we just knew they were gone, and with them, the party, the fun and some of the best rock songs ever written. Best hair too!
But this sad story has a silver lining. Jones Street has just announced a reunion performance at FM Station on Friday, May 16, 2008. It’s billed as a ‘one time only’ but we’ve heard rumors circulating around the schoolyard that the band is seriously considering tour offers from some of their strip club crone’s. If this is true then there must truly be a God in Rock N’ Roll heaven.
Regardless of future shows or tours, you can be sure a Jones Street Reunion in LA will sell out, so get yourself over to myspace. com/fmstation and order your tickets now, or you’ll miss this chance to take a trip back in time, and into Hollywood history. Do you suppose some of those ‘names you know’ will be there too? At a Jones Street show? That’s a safe bet! So the party’s on boys and girls. Drag out that tight leather and leopard skin kiddies, there’s gonna be a rock show!
